Before that, try going online to your Microsoft "live" account & detaching the device from your account.
I still got the error, so I tried this registry thing: I have deleted all mention of my email address from the registry. Rebooted etc (in fact, it's the next day - work & all). Still get the same error!

    Any other thoughts?

I FIXED IT!! Simple and without resetting my Windows 10 or a clean install.

In windows 10 click the Cortana circle
    Type in Netplwiz
This will open a window with User accounts
    Click the advanced tab
Click Advanced in the Advanced User management box
On the left you'll see a folder called Users, click on it
On the right you'll see a list of users Look for the email address or login that you were not able to sign into. It will have a folder with an "down arrow icon" on it. Right click on it and delete it.
Do not delete users without that down arrow on the icon to the left of the Full name column. It's your local user.
If you see a duplicate of your local user with that down arrow icon delete it too.
No need to even restart or log out .
Now go to settings / users and login to your Microsoft account.
